We asked our Gill Race Team members about their best moments in sailing. Here’s what Simon Ling from Team Spitfire had to say.
1. What’s the best experience in your sailing career?
The best moment was in 2015 and my first year racing as part of Gill Race Team. Team Spitfire was crowned Corinthian World Champions at the 2015 J70 World Championships in La Rochelle, France. This was the first year we had raced with the current team structure and after a challenging year of mixed results preceding the Worlds, we managed to peak just at the right time.
2. What is your favourite Gill kit?
First the Race Jacket which is just great. Lightweight and comfortable it is perfect for summer keelboat racing. Next is the Thermogrid Zip Neck which is a fabulous mid layer. It’s warm and breathable, I use my all year round be that for sailing, skiing and walking the dogs on those cold and windy days. Must mention the KB1 Racer Jacket too. When we raced in the 2016 World Championships, we would be faced with a daily 90 min beat back to the Venue Yacht Club from the race area in 25-30kts. We elected to race in our Race Team Jackets but would carry the KB1 Racer Jackets specifically for the wet and cold beat home. A life saver!!
